Each vendor's own published terms were read through estate-fetch and stored whole (sha256 on every row). For every document, four questions were answered from the vendor's own words: who owns the business's data, vendor keeps aggregated or anonymised use, training AI on the business's data, export at exit. Every stated answer carries the sentence it rests on, checked against the stored text; 'not stated' means the document read does not address the question. A vendor with several documents reads 'varies' where they disagree. 20 vendors, 24 documents.

The detail
Each one cites where its numbers come from.
- Confluence data export and the exit terms of other docs tools
- Knowledge base dataset: who takes company writing, in their words
- Who owns company documentation written by staff or contractors?
- Is a company wiki a trade secret, and does licensing it end that?
- Can I sell our Notion or Confluence wiki to AI? Yes, once it is cleaned
The process
- Tell us what the pages cover, who wrote them and which tool hosts them.
- We check that tool's clauses and the rules on who owns writing done at work.
- Our reply says which of three routes your pages fit: a licence while the business keeps trading, a sale by the directors before a solvent company is struck off, because the Crown takes what a dissolved company still owns, or by the insolvency office-holder of one that cannot pay its debts, or the route your referring adviser has agreed.
Nothing on this site is paid for by a docs tool or a buyer, none of them were told their pages were being read, and no link here earns a commission. Each answer is our reading of a published document and is no substitute for advice on your own contract. How we earn: where a company licenses its knowledge base to a buyer we introduced, we charge 12.5% of the deal, subject to a minimum, as its exclusive agent, or 10%, again with a minimum, where the pages join a bundle or the pool, set in writing beforehand; a fee a buyer pays us goes back to the company as a credit.
Questions, answered directly
Can a company sell its knowledge base to an AI company?
If it owns the writing, yes, and most docs tools do not claim it: 14 of 20 vendors on this board say the content belongs to the customer. The harder questions are whether staff or contractors wrote it and whether the pages hold anything a client gave you in confidence.(Knowledge base software data terms: every row, with its source)
Will my wiki or docs tool train AI on our pages?
Several say no in plain words: Mintlify will not use Customer Data to train or develop AI models, KnowledgeOwl says Customer Content is never used to train AI models, and Box will not train Box AI on your queries or outputs without explicit consent. Guru says it may train private models on your content for your own use only.(Knowledge base software data terms: every row, with its source)
How do I get the pages out before I cancel?
Do it before you give notice. GitBook lets a customer request an export for up to 60 days after termination and Bit.ai for 14 days, while Slab and Slite put the duty on you and owe nothing once the account ends; Confluence can export a whole space as XML.(Knowledge base software data terms: every row, with its source)
Who owns pages that employees wrote?
In the US, a work made for hire belongs to the employer unless both sides agreed otherwise in a signed writing, under 17 U.S.C. 201(b); in the UK, section 11 of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act makes the employer the first owner of work an employee makes in the course of employment.(Knowledge base software data terms: every row, with its source)
And pages a contractor wrote?
Those usually stay with the contractor until they are assigned in writing. US law says a transfer of copyright is not valid unless it is in writing and signed by the owner, and the UK Act says an assignment is not effective unless it is signed by or on behalf of the person assigning.(Knowledge base software data terms: every row, with its source)
Is a knowledge base protected as a database?
In the UK a database right exists where there was substantial investment in obtaining, verifying or presenting the contents, and it lasts fifteen years from the end of the year the database was made. US law protects only an original selection and arrangement, as the Supreme Court held in Feist.(Knowledge base software data terms: every row, with its source)
